Bishop Joseph Strickland, one of Pope Francis' biggest critics in the U.S. Roman Catholic church, is sticking to his traditional principles after his abrupt firing Saturday by Pope Francis.
The now former Bishop of Tyler, Texas says he is steadfast in saying he would not change a thing.
"I'd do it the same way again," Strickland told LifeSiteNews in an exclusive interview Saturday. "I feel very much at peace in the Lord and the truth that he died for."
It is very rare for a Catholic bishop to be relieved of his duties.
In past cases bishops in trouble with the Vatican have been asked to resign before submitting a resignation, which typically the pope accepts.
Cardinal Daniel DiNardo of Galveston-Houston said in a statement that Strickland was asked to resign on Nov. 9 but refused.
Strickland has been at odds with Francis’ far-left changes and pronouncements, some of which directly contradict the ancient faith’s core Christian beliefs.
Recently Francis has suggested priests can bless same-sex unions, even though the church has long held that any sexual relations outside of marriage is sinful.
And this week the Vatican indicated transgender individuals could be baptized and serve as godparents.
In his LifeSiteNews interview Strickland said he was targeted because he failed to implement a directive by Francis to not allow regular services using the Latin Mass, a traditional form favored by some conservatives.
"I stand by all the things that were listed as complaints against me," Strickland said. "I know I didn't implement Traditionis Custodes [the Pope Francis decree effectively banning the Latin Mass] because I can't starve out part of my flock."
Strickland, a prolific user of social media who was named to the diocese by the late Pope Benedict in 2012, tweeted earlier this year he rejected Pope Francis' "program undermining the Deposit of Faith."
Strickland had become one of the most vocal standard bearers of U.S. Church conservatives and has a national following far beyond the small diocese of Tyler located in eastern Texas.
Strickland has strongly criticized President Biden and the Democratic party for their push for abortion rights, making him a hero for traditional U.S. Catholic media outlets.
Last year, when the Vatican defrocked the leading U.S. pro-life priest, Father Frank Pavone, for "blasphemous" social media posts and disobedience to bishops, Strickland was one of the few U.S. bishops to defend him publicly.
"The blasphemy is that this holy priest is canceled while an evil president promotes the denial of truth and the murder of the unborn at every turn, Vatican officials promote immorality and denial of the deposit of faith and priests promote gender confusion devastating lives... evil," Strickland wrote on the platform then known as Twitter.
From the start of his papacy Francis has claimed he is open to both dissent and dialogue within the Church, but has moved aggressively against Cardinals, bishops and priests who have challenged his far-left statements and changes to Catholic teachings.
Cardinal Gerhard Muller, former head of the Vatican’s Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, has openly criticized Francis’ doctrinal claims and noted that he has “has already uttered plenty of material heresies.”

Bishop Joseph Strickland, whom Pope Francis removed from his diocese over the weekend, led a rosary rally today in Baltimore as the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) conducted its meetings for its biannual plenary session.
At noon on Wednesday, November 15, Bishop Strickland led a public recitation of the rosary at the plaza on the waterfront side of the Marriott Waterfront Hotel Inner Harbor East, where the bishops are gathered for their meetings.
Bishop Strickland has regularly led the Rosary outside the bishops’ conference meetings in Baltimore in the past over such issues as protesting the giving of Holy Communion to pro-abortion politicians, a subject that the bishops have wavered on for decades. In 2021, he was the only bishop to join Catholics outside the bishops’ assembly. At the time, he stated, “When it comes to the Eucharist and the sanctity of life, I must speak. The most important thing I must speak about is the presence of the Lord and fighting the atrocity of abortion.”
Given Bishop Strickland’s removal from the Diocese of Tyler, Texas, over the weekend by Pope Francis, he will not have voting rights at the bishops’ conference.
The USCCB website states that at plenary assemblies, “Decisions ranging from election of Committee Chairmen and Conference Officers to subject matter of pastoral statements and revisions to liturgical books, require either a simple majority, or a vote of two-thirds of the member bishops in order to be approved. Active bishops, ordinary and auxiliary, both Latin and Eastern Rite are eligible to vote on particular items. Emeritus bishops are welcome to attend the Assemblies and participate in discussion and other activities, but they are not eligible to vote.”
Commenting on the silencing of his voice as an active voting member of the bishops’ conference, Bishop Strickland expressed his hope that other bishops would have the courage to take up the message he raised five years ago when confronting the McCarrick scandal and the promotion of homosexuality within the Church.
In a post on X, formerly Twitter, the Texas prelate said, “I stand by these words from 5 years ago. My voice has been removed from these gatherings but I hope someone, anyone will take up the message. The world needs the Truth of Jesus Christ, His Good News, now more than ever.”
In 2018, in the wake of the McCarrick scandal, Bishop Strickland called out those bishops who were openly or effectively questioning Catholic teaching on the grave sinfulness of homosexual activity. Without naming pro-LGBT Fr. James Martin, he questioned why bishops were allowing the priest to publicly contradict Church teaching on homosexuality.
Calling for a clear reiteration of and adherence to Catholic teaching on the matter, the courageous bishop received a round of applause from the assembled bishops. His 2018 address to the bishops’ conference can be viewed below.
In an exclusive interview with LifeSiteNews Editor-in-Chief John-Henry Westen on November 11, just hours after his removal, Bishop Strickland said that he believes he was removed because he “threatened some of the powers that be with the truth of the gospel.”
When Bishop Strickland was asked by Westen why he was removed from his position, he said, “The only answer I have to that is because forces in the Church right now don’t want the truth of the gospel.”
“They want it changed. They want it ignored. They want to be rid of the truth that is gloriously not going to go away. The truth that is Jesus Christ, His Mystical Body, which is the Church, all the wonders that the martyrs died for and the saints lived for through almost 2,000 years since Christ died and rose.”

“The one charge which is now sure to secure severe punishment is the careful keeping of the traditions of the Fathers.” These words of St. Basil (Ep. 243) can most aptly illustrate the deposition of the Bishop of Tyler, TX/USA, His Excellency Joseph E. Strickland. The deposition of Bishop Joseph E. Strickland signifies a black day for the Catholic Church of our day. We are witnessing a blatant injustice towards a bishop who did his duty in preaching and defending with parrhesia the immutable Catholic faith and morals and in promoting the sacredness of the liturgy, especially in the immemorial traditional rite of the Mass. All understand, and even the declared enemies of this Confessor Bishop, that the accusations brought against him are ultimately insubstantial and disproportionate and were used as a welcome opportunity to silence an uncomfortable prophetic voice within the Church.
What happened to the Bishops during the Arian crisis in the 4th century, who were deposed and exiled only because they intrepidly preached the traditional Catholic Faith, is again happening in our day. At the same time several Bishops, who publicly support heresy, liturgical abuses, gender ideology and openly invite their priests to bless same-sex couples, are not in the least importuned or sanctioned by the Holy See.
Bishop Strickland will probably go down in history as an “Athanasius of the Church in the USA,” who however, unlike St. Athanasius, is not persecuted by the secular power, but incredibly by the Pope himself. It seems that a kind of “purge” of Bishops, who are faithful to the immutable Catholic Faith and the Apostolic discipline, and which has been going on already for some time, has reached now a decisive phase.
May the sacrifice, which Our Lord asked from Bishop Strickland bear plenty spiritual fruits for time and eternity. Bishop Strickland and other faithful Bishops, who were already asked to resign, who are currently marginalized or who will be the next in this row, should say in all sincerity to Pope Francis: “Holy Father, why are you persecuting and beating us? We tried to do what all holy Popes asked us to do? With fraternal love we offer the sacrifice of this kind of persecution and exile for the salvation of your soul and for the good state of the Holy Roman Church. Indeed, we are your best friends, Most Holy Father!”
